“Our first ever virtual event with MobileCause allowed us to tap into a new audience, work with an industry partner, and provide supporters more insight into the work our organization does.“
– Meredith McGuffage, Team CCF Coordinator, Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation
Challenge
The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life of those with Cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct cancer. Each year the Cholangiocarcinoma team (TeamCCF) participates in many athletic fundraisers across the United States including 5Ks, half-marathons, marathons, Ironmans and triathlons. However, with social distancing restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic canceling many in-person athletic events, Team CCF knew they’d have to find a replacement for in-person fundraising events.
Solution
TeamCCF established a week-long virtual “Turkey Trot” in November 2020, allowing supporters the opportunity to run, walk, bike or swim in support of the organization. Meredith McGuffage, Team CCF Coordinator, got started setting up their MobileCause account to use the platform for the virtual Turkey Trot. The virtual athletic event included two registration levels: 1) The Acorn Level, which included a long sleeve T-shirt, race bib, awareness wristband and a downloadable Thanksgiving cookbook for those with Cholangiocarcinoma, 2) The Cornucopia level, which included everything from the Acorn Level plus an additional TeamCCF neck gaiter. Fundraising for the Turkey Trot was optional, but individuals were encouraged to set up their own MobileCause peer-to-peer fundraising page. Meredith and the rest of TeamCCF created a comprehensive promotion plan for the Turkey Trot with a virtual pep rally, social media posts, live Facebook promotions and a dedicated email blast.

Impact
The first ever virtual Turkey Trot surpassed TeamCCF’s fundraising goal of $10,000 to raise a total of $37,777. In addition, 70% of all Turkey Trot participants chose the option to fundraise for the event and create their own MobileCause peer-to-peer page. With the event being virtual, TeamCCF’s reach expanded beyond supporters’ geographic location, resulting in participants from 40 different states. MobileCause peer-to-peer fundraising allowed participants to share the Turkey Trot with family and friends outside of TeamCCF’s network. On social media, the virtual Turkey Trot received over 300 video and photo submissions. With help from the MobileCause platform, TeamCCF was able to engage supporters virtually and build a community even with COVID-19 limitations. As of 2021, the TeamCCF plans on continuing the virtual Turkey Trot even when social distancing restrictions are removed.
